When you think of driving a Corvette, it’s likely you imagine drifting in and out of lanes on the highway, clutching and shifting along the way. For many consumers, this is the dream—but recent 2016 sales numbers have shown that only 23% of Corvettes sold in the past year were manuals. To see why the automatic 2017 Corvette Grand Sport has been such a hit, Motor Trend took it out for its first-ever test drive with the magazine.
The 2017 Corvette Grand Sport first test put this sport car’s automatic transmission through its paces. With a snarling 6.2-liter V8 engine that pumps out 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, it’s easy to see why the Grand Sport trim is so beloved. When Motor Trend took the Grand Sport outfitted with an eight-speed automatic gearbox to the track, they realized that they could take advantage of this powerful engine even more.
In testing, the automatic Grand Sport’s acceleration got faster, pulling a zero to 60 mph time of 3.6 second and a quarter-mile time of 12.0 seconds at 116.6 mph. When equipped with the seven-speed manual, the zero to 60 time was 3.9 seconds and the quarter-mile came in at 12.2 second. While these times might not seem too different, in the automotive world they mean the world.
If you want world-class performance without breaking the bank—or needed to learn how to drive stick—then the automatic 2017 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport is the vehicle for you.
