The Chevrolet Camaro is known for its speed. However, auto enthusiasts were recently surprised to learn that the 2017 Camaro ZL1 was able to complete the iconic Nürburgring track in a whopping 7:23.77. For those who don’t know, that’s incredibly fast. Wikipedia first reported it and others became skeptical.
According to GM Authority, the previous Camaro clocked-in around 7:41, which makes the 2017 Camaro ZL1 speed way more impressive. In fact, the 7:23 time puts the new Camaro ahead of models like the 1993 McLaren F1, an expensive supercar known for its performance and handling. So did the Camaro actually hit that mark? We’ll have to wait until August 8th or better when Chevrolet reveals it themselves.
What exactly is the Nürburgring? This large-capacity motorsports track is located in western Germany, in the Rhineland-Palatinate. Built in 1984 in a relatively secluded area, the combined track is over 16 miles long with more than 170 turns. Most vehicles are tested on the Nordschleife, the northern portion, which is still 12 miles long. The Nürburgring is considered the gold standard in the auto world.
GM and Chevrolet have not confirmed this time, though the number was leaked after the Camaro set a record-breaking time. While some might find it hard to believe, the Camaro team has actually been in Germany for most of the year tuning the Camaro for the famous track.
