It’s been twenty years since an American brand last topped Consumer Reports’ full-size sedan ratings. It’s almost as if American automakers pricked their fingers on the spindles of Japanese and European manufacturers and fell sharply into a deep, deep two decade-long sleep. It appears, however, that their Prince Charming has arrived at long last: Consumer Reports has named the 2014 Chevrolet Impala as the best-in-class among full-size sedans.
Consumer Reports described themselves as “stunned” by how good the 2014 Impala feels. After a battery of more than 50 tests and weeks of evaluation, the Impala emerged as a markedly better car, compared not only to its previous iterations, but when held up against other vehicles in the segment. So impressed was Consumer Reports, and yet still so stunned as if awakening from a twenty year-long dream, that it almost seemed as if it had to reassure itself of all the vehicles the 2014 Chevy Impala manages to outclass with ease.
Consumer Reports makes certain to highlight the fact that the Impala can go from 0-60mph faster than the Audi A4 and the Jaguar XK8, has better quarter mile acceleration than the Chrysler 300 and Subaru BRZ, dry-brakes better than the BMW 328i and the Mercedez-Benz E350, provides more front-seat comfort than the Porsche Panamera and the Tesla Model S and more back-seat comfort than the Lincoln MKZ and the Nissan Maxima, handles better than the Ford Taurus and the Lincoln MKS, and provides a better ride than…ahem…the Audi A4, Acura RLX, Acura TL, BMW 7 Series (yes, all of them), Cadillac XTS, Hyundai Genesis, Tesla Model S, and Volkswagen Passat.
Whew. Yeah, that’s a lot of pretenders to the princely throne that it had to trump on the way to Sleeping Beauty’s bedside. Some of those vehicles cost nearly twice as much as the 2014 Chevy Impala, which suggests that your money is better spent buying two different Impalas than it would be buying a supposed luxury vehicle that’s more liable to turn into a pumpkin at midnight (we’re mixing our fairy tale metaphors, yeah, but we stand by it).
